MSN Degree College Grants
In the nursing world, an advanced degree means that you’ll qualify for higher-paying jobs with more responsibilities. However, many nurses do not go back to school for their master of science in nursing (MSN) degree simply because of the expense of tuition. Luckily, with the help of college grants, more and more nurses are able to pursue MSN degrees.
Grants are given to applicants based on financial need. While scholarships are typically based on merit or applicant essays, grant committees consider proposals from applicants who really need the money to advance their education. As an undergraduate, you may have been awarded the Federal Pell Grant, an educational grant that is available to all students who qualify based on their family’s financial status. This grant is no longer available to you if you’re getting a master’s degree, but luckily, there are a number of MSN degree college grants available.
Government Grants
The government is one of the largest sources of grant money for nursing students. Departments like the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and state governments offer these funds to students in order to help promote advanced education in the nursing field. Throughout the country, hospitals and other healthcare organizations are in dire need of nurses of all educational levels, so the government offers grants as incentives to work in this field.
Private Grants
The government isn’t the only source for MSN degree grants. In fact, many private health and nursing organizations have large funds specifically for nurses who want to go back to school. Some of the organizations you should check out include the following:
- American Association of Nurse Anesthetists
- American Academy of Nurse Practitioners
- Gerontological Society of America
The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and other general nursing professional organizations also sometimes maintain lists of grants available to nursing students, so contact them to learn about more opportunities.
Grants from your School
In addition to government grants and grants offered by private organizations, you could also turn to your school of choice for financial aid. Most schools have grant programs for students, which could help you pay not on for tuition, but also for other expenses, like room and board. These grants are given on a rolling basis in most cases, and you can find out more about the programs available at your school by talking to both the financial aid director at your college and the head of the nursing department.
Loan Forgiveness Programs
Along with traditional grants, don’t forget to apply to the nursing Student Loan Forgiveness Program if you qualify. This source of money can help to repay a large chunk of your loans after you complete school and begin to work in the nursing field. Some employers offer similar programs to their employees, so this could be a good source of money for school as well.
Top Masters in Nursing Degrees
While a bachelors or associates degree in nursing is perfect for many entry level positions, advancement in the field often requires further education, such as a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree. Nurses with an MSN degree will have intricate knowledge of the healthcare field, and be able to use their expertise to treat patients in a variety of medical situations. Below you will find an extensive list of schools offering accredited MSN degrees.
